The knowledge of buying used excavators

Whether you want to buy a new or second-hand excavator, you may accidentally buy a refurbished machine, but no matter how good the refurbishment is, there are loopholes, so how can you check if an excavator is a refurbished machine?

In order not to be cheated, you must first know what a refurbished machine is. There are two main types of refurbished machines on the market.

Refurbished machine category:

Category 1: Replacement of spare parts

Some excavators with longer vehicle age and poorer vehicle conditions are replaced with spare parts and processed for appearance. After a series of processing methods, the excavator has been remodeled, making it difficult to distinguish between its actual model and condition.

category 2: Repair and painting

Repair and paint some worn parts during the normal use of the excavator. This type of renovation is actually good for excavators. Today we will focus on the refurbishing of the first category. Because buying this kind of excavator often brings great losses to users.

However, no matter how good it is, there will be loopholes. Let's take a look at the refurbishment methods that are commonly used by businesses.

Refurbishment method:

First, the whole excavator spray paint

After the service life of the excavator is longer, the paint fading tends to be more serious, and some parts will rust after rubbing. In order to make an excavator for more than ten years look like it is only used for two or three years, the merchant generally performs three steps on the whole excavator.

  1. Painting the whole excavator.

  2. For the refurbishment of some Chinese models, the brand LOGO of the excavator was replaced. This is because some joint venture brand excavators at the same tonnage are more expensive than Chinese excavators. For example, the old Sany, Xugong and Liugong excavators are painted with Komatsu or other joint-venture brands.

  3. Spray the new paint with an acidic liquid such as oxalic acid or thin cement slurry. Corrosion of new paint by spraying to achieve the purpose of refurbishing. Therefore, users must carefully discern when buying second-hand excavators.

Second, welding, sheet metal

Some excavators are accident vehicles that have experienced rollovers, landslides, and other burials. Often, their sheet metal parts, such as the cab and doors, have been severely deformed. If such excavators flow directly into the second-hand market, the price will be much lower, but replacement cabs and hatches are expensive. Some businesses will choose to use traditional welding and sheet metal processes to handle these excavators.

Some excavators have suffered severe working conditions, or have used the excavator for a long time, and the boom may crack. In order to achieve the purpose of refurbishment, some merchants choose to cut the cracks, weld the cutouts and weld them after superimposing steel plates from the inside, and then polish and smooth the weld seams before repainting. In this way, the structural strength of the boom is difficult to guarantee. Yes, I hope that the user will carefully observe when checking the used excavator.

Third, replace the nameplate

The nameplate of the excavator is the place where information is recorded. Generally, it includes information such as the model, total mass, production date, place of production, and a serial number of the excavator. The nameplate on the large parts such as the engine, large pump, and main control valve also records the type and production. Date and other information.

Some merchants choose to replace all these nameplates in order to disguise the true information of the excavator. The replacement of the nameplates is low in cost and easy to operate. The nameplate of the whole machine is generally riveted, and large nameplates such as engines and large pumps can be removed and replaced directly. However, there are often marks on the replacement of the nameplate, and it is not difficult to find it by careful observation.

Fourth, adjust the hour meter

The working hour meter of the excavator is designed to count the working hours. There is a certain relationship with the service life of the excavator. Adjusting the used excavator meter is a common refurbishment method for merchants. It's simple, but some experienced users will never look at the hour meter when buying second-hand excavators because many second-hand excavator hour meters no longer have credibility.

Fifth, change model characteristics

It is difficult for the average user to distinguish the used excavator by changing the model characteristics. For example, taking the Carter 325D and 329D, which are the models that businesses like to change, as an example, it is difficult to distinguish the Carter 325D from the 329D after the standard change and series processing.

However, ideas always exist, some sellers are upgrading their refurbishment technology, so when we buy second-hand excavators, we must be more careful. You can learn about this model through the Internet or agents. After seeing the target model, you can learn about this machine through the Internet or agents.

A quick check to identify whether the excavator is refurbished or not, you can start with the following 13 aspects:

How to identify refurbished machines?

1. Check if entire excavator hoses are original or not. The more oil pipes were changed, the longer the excavator's using time is. And the work efficiency will be very bad. If you can’t distinguish between the original oil pipe and the non-original oil pipe, you can see the brand. There are many types of tubing brands on the machine.

2. See if the chain, drive wheel, and guide wheel are original.
The original ones are marked. If the machine is new and the chain and drive wheels are worn out, then the machine may be refurbished hard. The condition of the upper body of the machine must be proportional to the condition of the lower body.

3. The interior in the cab
The inconspicuous corners can tell the year of use of the machine.

4. See if the traveling motor on both sides is the same brand.
Open the cover plate on the back of the motor to see if it is the same series of brands as the original machine.

5. Look at the three major pieces of the machine.
① See if the engine is too clean. The nameplate on the engine can be used to find out when it was produced. It can be checked to match the age of the excavator, especially if the screws have been moved. If you use a wrench to remove an unmoved screw, it will click.

② Check whether the hydraulic pump has adjusted the flow rate and whether there is oil leakage. If this happens, be careful, and it is likely to be dismantled and refurbished.

③ Check whether the distribution valve has traces of oil leakage. Some distribution valves are integrated and some are piece by piece. If the paint is done, there should be traces in the middle. This can tell whether the distribution valve has been moved.

6. The entire machine, boom, arms, bucket, and cylinder.
The arms, buckets, and cylinder of the excavator have steel stamps. See if they can be connected accordingly. If they are not connected, it is likely that the disassembled parts are replaced and installed.

7. Price
If the price is too low, you must be careful. A too low price may be a trap to get you in. You must always remember price varies from quality.

8. See other traces of the whole excavator's boom and arms

See if there are cracks in the entire excavator's boom and arms and whether there are any traces of electric welding, so as to determine whether the condition of the machine is refurbished.

9. Load the machine information into the instrument panel

See if there are any alarm records, and then see if the buttons on the instrument panel are damaged. If it is broken, it means that the operator often goes in and presses the excavator system. This also shows the age of the excavator.

10.Battery

Don't ignore the battery too, often these details can see the problem. See if the electrolyte in the battery is enough, see how old the battery is, what brand it is, and whether there is any trace of oxidation in the battery terminal.

11. Shop around

Buy excavators to shop around, don't rush to start buying it. Compare it with the model you want to buy.

12, look at the operating handle of the excavator

The operating handle of the excavator can reflect the service life of the machine. If you touch it every day in the driver ’s hands, the surface will be shiny. The operating handle on the excavator for a short time should have a layer of texture. Whatever to renovate the excavator, it is generally impossible to replace the operating handle.

13. Bring some experienced excavator masters and excavator repairmen

When you buy a machine, take some experienced excavator masters and excavator repairmen with you, and go to help together. The one goes to the test machine, and the other one watches it below to see how the engine exhausts.
